Gallatin, TN Area Guide

Gallatin is an excellent place to live. Gallatin is the county seat of Sumner County, Tennessee and is located approximately 30 miles northeast of Nashville. Gallatin sits beside Old Hickory Lake which is world-famous for its fishing and other recreational activities. Gallatin has a variety of natural landscapes including open fileds, forests, hills and lakes. Gallatin is a very fast growing community. Many people find Gallatin to be the perfect place to live with beautiful homes, good schools, vibrant industries, plenty of shopping, great restaurants, good roads, and nice people.


Sumner County is the second oldest county in Middle Tennessee. It was created in November 1786 by an act of the General Assembly of the State of North Carolina. It was named for Revolutionary War soldier Colonel Jethro Sumner. In 1802 Gallatin was established as the permanent county seat. Gallatin was named after Albert Gallatin, Secretary of Treasury to presidents Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. In 1803 the town was surveyed and platted and Andrew Jackson was the first to purchase a lot. He also founded the first general store in Gallatin. The first courthouse and jail were also built that year on the central town square. The town was first incorporated in 1815. It later functioned under a charter established by a 1953 Private Act of the State Legislature.  

Parks and Recreation

Gallatin is home to six parks, three golf courses and it surrounds a large part of Old Hickory Lake. Old Hickory Lake is the perfect place for picnics, walks along the shoreline, boating, fishing, swimming or just watching the sailboats and people. There are parks located along the shoreline that offer picnic areas, walking and biking trails, and much more.

Attractions and Activities

Gallatin offers a vast assortment of attractions and activities. Whether you are in the mood for shopping or dining out, Gallatin has plenty to offer. There are numerous historic homes in the area available for touring. Gallatin is also home to The Palace Theater, located in historic downtown Gallatin. The Palace is the oldest silent movie theater still standing in the south and it hosts a variety of events, movies, and shows.


Gallatin has a variety of event throughout the year! Annual events include the Sumner County Fair, which is held during the last week of August, the Gallatin Christmas Parade, and a Fall Festival held on the square.
